At Speech Improvement Group, we use two approaches to stuttering therapy:
 | Fluency Shaping Techniques
These are techniques used by the client to avoid stutters and to produce more fluent speech. We work on modified approaches to speaking, such as using special breathing techniques, which encourage fluency.
|
 | Stuttering Modification Techniques
These are techniques which teach the client how to manage stuttered moments. This approach to therapy includes the following:
Systematic Desensitization: The client learns that it is “ok to stutter.” We work on getting over the fear of stuttering. This both enables the client to work more easily on the modification techniques as well as often reducing the frequency of stuttering.
Stuttering Modification: The client learns how to modify stuttered moments. These include the techniques of:
Cancellation: The client goes back and re-says the stuttered word/phrase, attempting to do it differently.
Pullout: The client learns how to get out of a stuck moment.
Preparatory sets: The client prepares for a stutter that he knows is going to happen. |
We generally work with clients on fluency shaping and stuttering modification concurrently, as we find this works best to improve speech. In this way, the individual is able to speak more fluently overall and at the same time to be able to manage any stutters that do arise.
